“GST Council Meeting Today: Key Topics Include Insurance Premium Taxation, Rate Rationalisation, Online Gaming Revenue, Health Insurance Tax Reductions, and Measures Against GST Evasion”
Today’s GST Council meeting: Today, September 9, is the scheduled meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council, which is headed by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and consists of state finance ministers and tax authorities.
According to sources who spoke to PTI, the Group of Ministers’ (GoM) recommendations for rate rationalization, the taxation of insurance premiums, and an update on online gaming income are among the subjects that the GST Council is anticipated to examine.
According to the sources, the fitment committee is also anticipated to submit a report on the revenue implications of the GST imposed on life, health, and reinsurance premiums.
Health Insurance and Life Insurance Taxes
The GST Council will discuss whether to remove the present 18% tax burden on health insurance or to exempt specific groups of people, such old citizens, according to PTI.
Discussions about reducing the GST on life insurance premiums will also take place. It further stated that ₹8,262.94 crore from GST on health insurance premiums and ₹1,484.36 crore from GST on health reinsurance premiums were collected by the federal government and the states.
The opposition leaders including Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, a fellow BJP politician, have brought up this controversial topic in the Parliament as well, asking a GST exemption on health and life insurance payments.
Rationalization of Rates
According to the article, West Bengal Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya brought up the topic of rate rationalization during the August GoM meeting. The fitment committee was tasked with conducting additional data analysis on the problem.
The study stated that the GoM has notably refused to alter the four-tier GST slab system, which consists of five percent, twelve percent, eighteen percent, and twenty-eight percent. Instead, the committee has been tasked with reviewing the scope for rationalization.
Revenue Report for Online Gaming
The status report comparing the GST revenue received from online gambling before and after October 1, 2023, will also be discussed by the GST Council. According to the research, the majority of online gaming companies did not pay GST prior to that date and argued for separate tax rates for games with varying skill levels and randomness.
The government has levied a 28 percent goods and services tax (GST) on small wagers made on internet gaming sites and land-based casinos since October of last year. The GST Council proposed the tax charge at its August 2023 meeting, and the Central GST statute was later changed to clarify the clause, according to the newspaper.
