The Hidden Causes of Bollywood Divorces: AR Rahman’s Wife’s Lawyer Discusses Unrealistic Expectations and Marital Boredom

AR Rahman and Saira Banu Announce Divorce After 29 Years of Marriage: Lawyer Explains Common Causes of Bollywood Breakups

In a surprising and heart-wrenching announcement, music maestro AR Rahman and his wife Saira Banu have revealed their decision to divorce after 29 years of marriage. The couple, who have three children together — Ameen, Khatija, and Rahima — expressed their deep sadness over the end of their long relationship, especially with their 30th wedding anniversary just around the corner.

Rahman took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his heartbreak, writing, “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter.” His emotional post reflected the sorrow both he and Saira feel as they part ways.

While fans and media outlets are left speculating about the reasons behind their divorce, Saira Banu’s lawyer, Vandana Shah, has shed light on the broader context of marriages and divorces in Bollywood. Speaking on The Chill Hour podcast, Shah addressed some of the unique pressures that relationships in the film industry face.

Boredom, High Expectations, and Outside Influences: Lawyer Discusses Reasons Behind Bollywood Divorces

According to Vandana Shah, the nature of life in Bollywood often leads to challenges that aren’t common in regular marriages. “Their (Bollywood) lives are very different,” Shah noted. “I don’t think infidelity is the cause of a lot of breakdowns in marriages. What causes the breakdown is boredom. When you’ve seen it all, you move on from one marriage to another simply because of boredom — and that’s very peculiar to Bollywood and super-rich families.”

Shah went on to highlight other factors that contribute to the demise of relationships in the industry. “Secondly, they live very different sexual lives, which are not always in the public eye. The expectations from a sex life in such marriages are much higher than in a normal person’s marriage,” she explained. “Third, adultery happens, and one-night stands really don’t matter as much. I’m not part of Bollywood, but I can speak from the cases that have come to me. The main issues, however, are boredom, a lack of attention or importance, and external influences — such as family members who are not a part of the marriage but still have a say.”

Divorce in Dignity: Rahman and Saira’s Separation Marks a Peaceful End

While the details of Rahman and Saira’s split remain private, Vandana Shah expressed her admiration for how the couple is handling the end of their marriage. “Every long marriage goes through ups and downs, and I’m extremely happy that, if it has come to an end, it has done so in a dignified manner,” Shah said. “Both Rahman and Saira will continue to support each other and wish each other well.”

For now, both Rahman and Saira have asked for privacy during this difficult time, and it seems they are determined to part ways amicably, with mutual respect for the years they shared together.

As fans process the news of this unexpected breakup, it serves as a reminder that even the most high-profile marriages are not immune to the challenges that come with fame, fortune, and the intense pressures of the public eye.

The Future: Support for Family Amidst Change

Despite the separation, the couple remains committed to co-parenting their children — Ameen, Khatija, and Rahima. Rahman, known for his dedication to his family, has always kept his personal life largely private, and it’s expected that he and Saira will continue to prioritize their children’s well-being moving forward.
