Language Row in Mumbai Local: Viral Video Shows Woman Saying, “Speak Marathi or Get Out”
Mumbai, July 21 – A fresh linguistic controversy erupted aboard a Central Railway local train in Mumbai, when a verbal spat among women passengers over a seat turned into a heated language debate. A video from the incident, now viral on social media, shows a woman telling others, “If you want to live in Mumbai, speak Marathi, or get out.”
The incident took place in the ladies coach, where 6–7 women are seen arguing. The disagreement, which began over seating arrangements, escalated into a Marathi vs. Hindi identity clash, sparking widespread reactions online.
Railway officials confirmed the incident occurred aboard a Central line train but said no official complaint has been filed so far.
This is part of a wider pattern of rising language-related tensions in Maharashtra. In recent weeks, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has been criticized for its aggressive rhetoric against non-Marathi speakers.

- In Thane, a street vendor was slapped for not speaking Marathi.

The latest incident once again raises questions about linguistic intolerance and Mumbai’s cosmopolitan character.
