Trump Orders Immediate Eviction of Homeless in Washington DC, Plans National Guard Deployment
Washington, DC – August 8, 2025 (Bloomberg/Reuters) –
US President Donald Trump has vowed to remove homeless individuals from the nation’s capital and crack down on crime, even as Washington’s mayor insists there has been no recent spike in crime rates.
During a signing ceremony at the White House on Friday, Trump announced that his administration is preparing a plan to deploy hundreds of National Guard troops to Washington, DC. According to a senior US official, the exact number of troops and their roles are still being finalized. The move mirrors a previous deployment Trump ordered in Los Angeles to manage immigration protests, despite opposition from local authorities.
Unlike in US states, where governors authorize Guard deployments, the president has direct authority over the National Guard in Washington, DC — a power used in the past, including during the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
“The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital. Criminals, you don’t have to move out — we’re putting you in jail where you belong.”
The White House declined to specify what legal powers Trump might use to evict people, noting the president controls only federal lands and buildings in the city.
Washington DC currently has 3,782 single homeless individuals, according to The Community Partnership, a nonprofit working to reduce homelessness. Most are in emergency shelters or transitional housing, rather than living on the streets.
Trump is set to hold a press conference on Monday to address “violent crime in Washington, DC,” where he may reveal more details about his eviction plan.
The administration has already increased federal law enforcement presence in the city after a violent attack on a young White House staffer — an incident that reportedly angered the president. Federal agents on Friday night investigated multiple cases, including unlicensed firearm possession, motorists driving with suspended licenses, and illegal dirt bike riding.
