Patna/New Delhi: A major political development has emerged in Bihar as the state’s longest-serving Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, has expressed his desire to move to the Rajya Sabha, indicating that a new government could soon be formed in the state. The announcement was made on Thursday (March 5), triggering political reactions and protests by some supporters outside his residence in Patna.
Decision Comes Months After Taking Oath
Nitish Kumar had recently taken oath as Bihar’s Chief Minister for the 10th time. However, less than four months into the new term, his statement about joining the Rajya Sabha has stirred fresh political debate in the state.
Changing Political Equations After Elections
In the recent Bihar Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats, while Janata Dal United secured 85 seats.
The National Democratic Alliance collectively won 202 out of 243 seats in the Bihar Assembly to form the government.
During the election campaign, opposition parties had alleged that the BJP might not allow Nitish Kumar to continue as Chief Minister after the polls, even if the alliance secured victory.

Nitish Kumar’s Statement
In a message posted on social media, Nitish Kumar said that since the beginning of his political career he had wished to serve in both houses of the Bihar legislature as well as both houses of Parliament.
He stated that he now wishes to contest the Rajya Sabha elections and assured that the new government formed in Bihar would continue to receive his cooperation and guidance.
Opposition Reaction
Opposition leaders strongly reacted to the development.
Tejashwi Yadav said that his party had earlier warned that after the elections Nitish Kumar might be replaced and a “Maharashtra-style political model” could be implemented in Bihar.
Meanwhile, Manoj Kumar Jha questioned the tone of the statement, suggesting that it sounded as if it had been “scripted in the corridors of power in Delhi.”
BJP’s Response
Union Minister Giriraj Singh rejected the opposition’s allegations, stating that Nitish Kumar had himself expressed the wish to serve in the Rajya Sabha and that no one could send him there against his will.
Two Decades of Leadership
Nitish Kumar has been a dominant figure in Bihar politics since first becoming Chief Minister in 2005 and has led the state government for nearly two decades. His possible move to the Rajya Sabha could open the door for a new Chief Minister in Bihar, potentially from the Bharatiya Janata Party
