Mumbai Rains LIVE Updates: IMD Issues Red Alert; 2 Dead in Vikhroli Landslide, Flights & Trains Affected

Mumbai, August 16, 2025 — Torrential rains battered Mumbai and surrounding regions on Saturday morning, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for several districts, including Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the IMD reported “intense to very intense convection” over Mumbai and its adjoining areas. The department forecasted moderate to intense spells of rain for the next 3–4 hours and urged residents in the affected districts to remain cautious.

“Mumbai Radar shows intense to very intense convection over the city and adjoining area. It is likely to continue for the next 2-3 hours,” IMD stated in its nowcast warning issued at 7:00 AM IST.

Tragedy in Vikhroli: Landslide Claims Two Lives

In a tragic incident, two people lost their lives and two others sustained injuries in a landslide triggered by the relentless downpour in Mumbai’s eastern suburb of Vikhroli early Saturday morning. According to officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), a section of a nearby hillock collapsed, sending a mass of soil and stones crashing onto a hut.

Emergency teams responded quickly and rescued four individuals from the debris. Two of them were declared dead on arrival, while the others are receiving treatment for their injuries.

Public Advisory and Emergency Contact

The BMC has issued an advisory urging residents to avoid stepping out unless absolutely necessary. In its post on X, the civic body stated:

“Please dial 1916, the contact number of the Main Control Room of the BMC, for help and official information, if required.”

Transportation Disruptions: Trains and Flights Hit

Heavy overnight showers, with some areas recording more than 200 mm of rainfall, led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas across the city, severely affecting local train services.

Private airline SpiceJet also issued a travel advisory, alerting passengers about potential delays and cancellations.

“Due to bad weather (heavy rain) in Mumbai (BOM), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may get affected,” SpiceJet posted on X.

Red Alert for Two Days

The IMD has forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai and surrounding districts over the next 48 hours. The red alert, the highest level of weather warning, indicates the possibility of severe weather events that could cause damage, disruptions, and pose a risk to life.

Authorities on High Alert

The BMC and disaster response teams remain on high alert as rainfall continues to lash the city. Pumping stations have been activated to clear waterlogged roads, while rescue teams have been deployed in vulnerable areas.

Citizens are advised to:

  • Stay indoors unless essential
  • Monitor official updates
  • Avoid low-lying and landslide-prone zones
  • Keep emergency numbers handy
