MUMBAI: A festive practice turned into tragedy when 11-year-old Mahesh Jadhav lost his life during Dahi Handi preparations in Ketkipada on Sunday. Following a complaint by his mother, Sangeetha Jadhav, Dahisar police registered a case against Mandal president Balaji Surnar and three others under BNS 2023 Sections 106(1) (Causing death by negligence) and 223 (Disobedience to orders by public servants).
📌 How the Tragedy Unfolded
During Navtarun Mitra Mandal’s practice, Mahesh climbed to the sixth level of the human pyramid.
Without safety gear, helmet, or mattress, he slipped and fell to the ground.
Despite a legal ban on children under 14 participating in Dahi Handi (in place since 2017), Mahesh had been a Govinda for 4–5 years.
⚖️ Police Action
Mandal president and three others charged for negligence and disobeying safety orders.
Following the incident, the mandal cancelled this year’s Dahi Handi festival.
💰 Compensation and Challenges
Shiv Sena MLA Prakash Surve announced ₹5 lakh aid for the family.
Due to the father’s alcoholism, funds to be transferred directly to Mahesh’s mother.
Problem: She has no identity proof or bank account. MLA has promised to assist in creating both.

In July 2024, the Maharashtra government announced insurance for 1.5 lakh Govindas via Oriental Insurance Company.
In case of death, the family is entitled to up to ₹10 lakh compensation.
