Russia-Ukraine War: Trump to Take “Very Important Decision” in Two Weeks if Peace Talks Fail
Washington, August 23, 2025:
US President Donald Trump has announced that he will make a “very important decision” within the next two weeks regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, depending on developments and the outcome of peace negotiations between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Speaking to reporters from the Oval Office, Trump said that his decision could involve imposing “massive sanctions or tariffs or do nothing” if the two leaders fail to reach an agreement to end the war. He emphasized the importance of dialogue, advocating for talks between Putin and Zelensky.
“In two weeks, we are going to know which way I am going because I’m going to go one way or another. It’s going to be very important decision. I’m gonna decide whether it’s not massive sanctions or massive tariffs or both or do we do nothing and say it’s your fight. It takes two to tango,” Trump said.
“I wanted to have a meeting with those two. We’ll see if they don’t have a meeting, then why it was so, after I told them to have a meeting.”
Trump also expressed his displeasure over the recent Russian missile attack that reportedly targeted a US factory in Ukraine. “I’m not happy about it and I’m not happy about anything about that war. I’ve settled seven wars and you think about pre-wars, that’ll be three so 10 wars. Not happy at all. Over the next two weeks we are going to find out which ways it’s going to go,” he added.
Background on Diplomatic Efforts
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently stated that President Putin is willing to hold talks with Zelensky on the condition that all issues related to resolving the conflict are thoroughly addressed by experts and ministers before the meeting.
“The Russian president repeatedly said that he is ready to meet, including with Zelensky, if there is an understanding that all issues that require consideration at the highest level have been worked out thoroughly,” Lavrov told RT.
Recent High-Level Meetings
On August 19, 2025, Trump met with Zelensky at the White House along with several European leaders, indicating a stronger international push towards peace. During the meeting, Trump hinted at the possibility of providing security guarantees for Ukraine and proposed a trilateral summit involving himself, Zelensky, and Putin, according to US media reports.
Meanwhile, President Putin held a high-profile summit in Alaska on August 15 with Trump. Although the talks lasted for hours, the meeting ended without any formal agreement or ceasefire announcement. However, Trump described the discussions as “very productive,” and Putin considered them a potential starting point for future negotiations.
