India to Continue Russian Oil Imports Despite Trump’s Threats: NYT Report

New Delhi/Washington (Aug 2, Reuters):
According to a New York Times report published Saturday, Indian officials have confirmed that India will continue purchasing oil from Russia, even in the face of potential penalties threatened by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

India Unfazed by Tariff Threats

Trump had recently warned of 100% tariffs on countries buying Russian oil, unless Moscow agrees to a significant peace deal with Ukraine. He also hinted at penalties for India over continued trade ties with Russia, especially in arms and energy sectors. However, Indian officials remain firm on their stance.

The NYT quoted two senior Indian government sources saying there has been no change in India’s oil import policy. One of them stated, “The government has not issued any direction to oil companies to reduce Russian imports.”

Trump Sends Mixed Signals

Trump, in a post on Truth Social last month, suggested that India could face additional consequences for its ties with Russia. However, he later softened his tone, saying, “I don’t care what India does with Russia.” On Friday, he went on to claim that India had stopped buying Russian oil—a statement not supported by Indian officials.

India’s Dependence on Russian Oil

Russia continues to be India’s largest oil supplier, accounting for approximately 35% of its total crude imports. However, Reuters earlier reported that Indian state refiners temporarily halted Russian oil purchases in July as the pricing advantage declined.

No Official Comments Yet

As of now, the White House, India’s Ministry of External Affairs, and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas have not issued formal responses to the NYT report or Reuters’ requests for comment.

Conclusion:

Despite political pressure and tariff threats from the U.S., India appears committed to maintaining its energy ties with Russia, prioritizing its national energy security and strategic autonomy.
