PM Modi in China for SCO Summit: Meets Xi Jinping, Pledges to Resolve Border Issues and Boost Ties
Tianjin, China – Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday during his visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. In their first face-to-face interaction since tensions escalated following deadly border clashes in 2020, both leaders pledged to work toward resolving long-standing border disputes and strengthening bilateral cooperation.
Addressing the meeting, PM Modi noted that India-China relations have progressed “in a meaningful direction,” and highlighted the creation of a “peaceful environment at the borders after disengagement.” President Xi, as reported by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, expressed hope that the talks in Tianjin would help “further elevate” and promote the “sustained, healthy, and stable development” of ties between the two Asian powers.
The summit, held in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin, brought together leaders from the SCO — a regional political, economic, and security bloc led by China. This marks PM Modi’s first visit to China since bilateral relations soured in the aftermath of the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes.
On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi is also expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The discussion comes at a time of increasing pressure from Washington, as U.S. President Donald Trump intensifies his criticism of New Delhi’s continued crude oil purchases from Moscow. In August, the Trump administration imposed steep 50% tariffs on Indian exports to the U.S. — the highest in Asia — citing India’s energy ties with Russia as a key concern.
PM Modi also held talks with Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu during the summit. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to development cooperation with the island nation, calling it a partnership that benefits the people of both countries.
The SCO summit is seen as a key platform for regional diplomacy amid shifting global alliances and rising geopolitical tensions.
