Himachal Rains Wreak Havoc: 355 Roads Blocked, Over 1,000 Power Transformers Disrupted
Shimla, August 17 (PTI): Torrential rains continue to batter Himachal Pradesh, triggering natural disasters that have severely disrupted transportation and power infrastructure across the state. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, at least 355 roads, including three National Highways (NHs), remain blocked. Additionally, 1,067 electricity distribution transformers have gone out of service, leaving several regions in the dark.
The Mandi district remains the worst affected, with 202 roads, including NH-21, still blocked. In Kullu, 64 roads are shut, including NH-305, followed by Sirmaur (28 roads), Kangra (27), Chamba (9), Shimla (8), Una (7), Lahaul and Spiti (6), Kinnaur (2) including NH-5, and one each in Bilaspur and Hamirpur.
The power supply has taken a major hit, particularly in Kullu and Mandi. Of the 1,067 transformers currently disrupted:
- Kullu has reported 557 transformers down,
- Mandi has 385,
- Lahaul and Spiti has 112,
- Kinnaur has 11, and
- Chamba has 2.
Water supply systems have also been severely affected, with 116 schemes disrupted across several districts. These include:
- Mandi (44)
- Kangra (41)
- Hamirpur (14)
- Kullu (9)
- Shimla (4)
- Lahaul and Spiti (3)
- Solan (1)
Heavy Rain Forecast Continues
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow’ weather warning for August 18, 21, 22, and 23, forecasting more spells of heavy to very heavy rain in isolated areas and light to moderate rain in most parts of the state.
In the last 24 hours, isolated parts of Himachal have recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall, while most other areas received light to moderate rain. The highest rainfall was reported from Kataula village in Mandi at 120 mm, followed by:
- Kangra – 110.8 mm
- Nahan – 103 mm
- Paonta Sahib – 69.8 mm
- Bhuntar – 63.3 mm
- Palampur – 60.4 mm
- Mandi – 26 mm
- Dharamshala – 20.6 mm
- Bilaspur – 10.4 mm
- Manali – 8 mm
- Kufri – 4 mm
- Sundernagar – 2 mm
- Shimla – 1 mm
Schools May Be Closed Locally
In view of the worsening conditions, the Education Minister of Himachal Pradesh has stated that schools may be closed locally depending on the severity of the weather and accessibility in affected regions.
