India Questions Trump on Russian Imports; Trump Responds, “I Don’t Know… I Will Find Out”
Digital Desk, New Delhi:
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday claimed he had no knowledge about the United States importing chemicals and fertilizers from Russia. This came after India accused the US of continuing trade with Russia, including the import of uranium hexafluoride, palladium, fertilizers, and chemicals — all vital for the American nuclear and electric vehicle sectors.
Trump made the remarks at a White House press briefing when asked by news agency ANI.
“I don’t know anything about that. We’ll have to look into it,” Trump responded. ANI has contacted his press team for further clarification, and a response is awaited.
Trump’s Tariff Threats on India Over Russian Oil Imports
Just a day earlier, Trump had sharply criticized India for purchasing oil from Russia.
He wrote on Truth Social:
“India is buying large quantities of oil from Russia and reselling it on the open market for profit. They don’t care about Ukrainians dying due to Russia’s war machine. I will be increasing tariffs on India drastically. Thanks for looking into this.”
India strongly condemned the statement. The Ministry of External Affairs called it “unreasonable and illogical,” clarifying that India’s energy imports are based on market needs and national energy security, especially after Western countries redirected their own supplies to Europe during the Ukraine crisis.
India’s Counterattack: US and EU Still Trading with Russia
India further highlighted that while some countries criticize its trade with Russia, they themselves continue to maintain significant economic ties with Moscow.
“We started importing oil from Russia when traditional suppliers diverted their stocks to Europe. At the time, the US itself encouraged India to stabilize global energy markets,” India said.
India also revealed that:
- The US imports uranium hexafluoride for nuclear power,
- Palladium for electric vehicle production,
- As well as fertilizers and chemicals from Russia.
- The EU’s total trade with Russia is projected to reach €67.5 billion in 2024, including 16.5 million tonnes of LNG.
India Asserts Right to Protect National Interests
India concluded its response with a strong message:
“As a major economy, India will take all necessary steps to protect its national interests and economic security.”
