Doctor Suicide Case: Father Seeks Death Penalty, Appeals Directly to Devendra Fadnavis
In a heart-wrenching plea for justice, the father of the 26-year-old doctor who died by suicide in Maharashtra’s Satara district has demanded the death penalty for the accused, addressing his appeal directly to Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
“My only demand is that the culprits should be punished with death by hanging. That’s all. There is nothing else,” he said emotionally.
The young doctor, posted at a government hospital in Phaltan, was found hanging on Thursday night. In a suicide note written on her palm, she accused police sub-inspector Gopal Badane of sexually assaulting her multiple times and software engineer Prashant Bankar of mentally harassing her for over five months. She lived in a flat owned by Bankar’s father.
“This happened to my daughter, but at least from now on, such atrocities should not happen to other daughters,” the grieving father said. “Those who commit such crimes must be punished with the death penalty.”
Drawing parallels with the Mahabharata, he added, “There were Duryodhana and Dushasana there, but not a single Krishna came forward to help my daughter. For the sake of future daughters, at least one Krishna should stand up and protect their honour.”
The victim’s brother has also demanded the strictest possible punishment for the accused.
Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis assured that no one involved directly or indirectly will be spared. “The doctor dying by suicide and writing such a note shows the immense pain she went through. We have suspended the officer involved and initiated an investigation,” he said.
Meanwhile, family members revealed that the doctor had filed complaints earlier but received no response from authorities. She had written to the SP and DSP, but no action was taken.
In a four-page suicide letter, she alleged that she was pressured by police officials and a Member of Parliament (MP) to issue fake fitness certificates for accused criminals and was harassed when she refused.
Police sources said that Prashant Bankar has been arrested from Pune and remanded to four days’ custody, while sub-inspector Badane has been suspended but remains absconding.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve criticised Fadnavis, saying, “If those who grew under Fadnavis’s protection are harassing women, then he has failed as Home Minister and should resign.”
