Mumbai rains LIVE updates: IMD issues red alert; BMC declares holiday for schools, colleges

The Mumbai city and surrounding regions were under a red alert from the India Meteorological Department, which was increased from an orange alert till 8:30 am on Thursday, September 26, 2024.

On Wednesday, September 25, 2024, after a protracted break, Mumbai was hit by intense rains that submerged low-lying neighborhoods, stopped local trains in their tracks, and forced at least 14 incoming planes to be diverted.

More than 100 mm of rain fell in five hours in some regions, turning some roadways into rivers of swiftly flowing water.
Thousands of commuters were left stuck at CSMT and other stations due to local trains stopping between Kurla and Thane stations on the Central line, causing traffic congestion in multiple locations.

For Mumbai City and the surrounding districts, the India Meteorological Department increased its orange signal to a red alert, which is in effect until 8.30 am on Thursday, September 26, 2024.
