No signal: iPhone users can now send text messages via Starlink satellites

iPhone users can now receive text messages without a mobile network, thanks to Elon Musk’s Starlink Direct to Cell update. This service is currently in the beta testing phase and is available to a few selected users.

Apple has just unveiled a groundbreaking new feature for iPhone users: the ability to send and receive text messages in areas with no cellular coverage. This is made possible through a partnership with Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite network, as part of the iOS 18.3 update.

Currently in its beta phase, SpaceX’s direct-to-cell satellite service allows text messaging via Starlink’s satellites. This service, which launched its beta testing in December, is now available to a select group of Android users running Android 15, including popular devices like the Samsung Z Fold and S24. Right now, the service is limited to T-Mobile customers in the U.S.

Beta testers are receiving notifications saying, “You can now stay connected with texting via satellite from virtually anywhere.” To enable the feature, iPhone users need to update to iOS 18.3 and activate it through their cellular data settings.

For now, the service is focused on text messaging only. Those in rural or low-coverage areas can use Starlink’s satellite network to send texts even when traditional cellular service is unavailable. But Apple and SpaceX have bigger plans in store—future updates will include voice and data capabilities, offering more options for users in remote locations.

Starlink’s Expansion in India:
In other news, Starlink has accepted the regulatory conditions set by the Indian government to launch satellite broadband services in India. The company has agreed to comply with security and data storage rules outlined by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), including storing all user data within India. Additionally, Starlink must ensure that Indian intelligence agencies have access to the data when required—conditions that are mandatory for any telecom-related licensing in the country.
