🇮🇳 India Unveils Bharatiya Antariksh Station Model; First Module Set for 2028 Launch

In a major leap toward establishing a sustained human presence in space, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Friday unveiled a full-scale model of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS) during the National Space Day celebrations at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
India plans to launch the first module of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station — BAS-01 — by 2028, with a complete five-module station expected to be operational by 2035. Once completed, the BAS will place India in the elite league of nations that maintain permanent space stations in orbit, joining only the International Space Station (ISS) and China’s Tiangong.
🚀 A Vision Taking Shape
The BAS-01 module, weighing approximately 10 tonnes, will be positioned in low Earth orbit at 450 kilometers above the Earth’s surface. The indigenous station is designed to support a wide range of activities, including scientific research, advanced technology demonstrations, and even space tourism.
According to ISRO officials, the station will serve as a platform for experiments in microgravity, life sciences, medicine, and interplanetary technology development. The BAS will also enable India to test vital systems for long-duration human spaceflight, paving the way for deep space missions.

- Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS)
- Bharat Docking System and Berthing Mechanism
- Automated Hatch System
- Scientific Imaging Viewports and Crew Recreation Zones
- Space Suits & Airlocks for Extra Vehicular Activities (EVAs)
- Protection Against Radiation and Micro Meteoroid Orbital Debris (MMOD)
- Refueling Systems for propulsion and life-support fluids
- Plug-and-play Integrated Avionics for mission flexibility

Beyond research, ISRO envisions the BAS as a commercial and educational platform. By opening its doors to space tourists, academic institutions, and international collaborations, the station is set to transform India’s space economy and inspire a new generation of scientists and engineers.
The unveiling of the 3.8-meter by 8-meter BAS-01 prototype captivated visitors and dignitaries at the event, becoming the centerpiece of the two-day National Space Day celebration that honors India’s growing stature in space exploration.
